H&S investment in the UK construction industry has led to a significant reduction in on-site deaths to 39 per year. BUT the average number of suicides of construction workers over the last five years is a staggering 283 per year! (1419 suicides reported 2011-2015. Source ONS).

Is it not time for you to invest in your workplace mental health as well as their physical safety!

DE-STIGMATISING MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

While Health & Safety in the workplace has been a hot topic for some decades now, and has contributed significantly to a definite reduction in rates of accidents and fatalities, the same focus has not been directed on mental health at work.

For example, in the UK construction industry the average number of construction worker fatalities over the past five years has reduced to 39 per year. However, what is perhaps not quite so widely reported is the average number of suicides of construction workers over the past five years – 283 per year! (1419 suicides reported between 2011-2015. Source ONS).

Use of anti-depressants is rising drastically, with the UK quoted as being one of the largest consumers of anti-depressants in Western Europe – as many as one in 10 or 11 of UK adults take the pill at some stage in their life.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that mental health issues are not being effectively dealt with in the workplace. A recent survey of 20,000 employees (Mental Health at Work Report 2016) highlighted some serious gaps in companies’ abilities to deal with mental health issues among their employees.

  • 77% of employees have experienced symptoms of poor mental health at some point in their lives.
  • 29% of employees have been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

Thrive in Business will assess your companies approach for destigmatising mental health, and then puts in place a structured programme which will underpin the psychological foundations of your workforce. Such emphasis should be given equal, if not prioritised, prominence in your plans for workplace wellness.
